Phippsburg Maine Day Trip

Phippsburg Maine is a wonderful day trip down this finger of land that jets out into Casco Bay. It gently follows the Kennebec River providing glimpses of water and deep forests. There are some hidden gems on this peninsula that make it a Phippsburg Mainepleasant way to spend the entire day.

We Started trip at in Bath on rt. 209 heading South past water inlets and tall marsh grass with open vistas of the river. We moved on past the entrance of Meadowbrook Campground one of our favorite places to camp in the area. Meadowbrook Camping Area is a second generation, family owned and operated campground nestled on 60 acres. They offer Cottage Rentals, Cabin Rentals, sites suitable to Big Rigs down to one man tents. Sites are spacious with options to be in the sun or tucked away in the woods.  They have a 1 mile nature trail that loops around a beaver pond, two playgrounds, heated showers and flush toilets, a laundromat, swimming pool, Lobsters & Clams cooked daily, Drifter’s Reef Snack Bar, arcade & rec hall and shuffleboard! We could go on about this wonderful campground. There’s something for everyone!  So, what are you waiting for?? Make your Maine Camping Reservations today, they do fill up fast!

Continuing our trip down the 209 we take a side road call Sabaco Road, passing by Wrong Way Road, heading for our lunch destination. We pass by Sabasco Harbor Resort. At this all in one resort you can enjoy rustic rooms to luxury condos. Dining rooms and outside lobster bakes. A golf course and tour boat. This is a great place to have wedding or just to get away with the family for a while.

On to our lunch destination, still traveling on the Sabasco Road we arrive at Anna’s Water Edge Restaurant. This is a small “Maine” restaurant that serves up some awesome food and a great view. From the parking area you look out overAnna's Water Edge Restaurant the cove with its water way filled with lobster buoys. A perfect scene for a picture or two.

You can order outside at the window and eat on one of their picnic tables overlooking the beautiful harbor or inside with table-side service. The inside is decorated with lots of nautical floats and pictures. You almost get the feel that you are on a fishing trawler heading out to see for your daily catch.

The menu was great and extensive. Local seafood of course. I ordered the pickled Herring to start with and my friend ordered the smoked crab dip. Both dishesPickled Herring were fresh and flavorful. Then onto the fried local clams. Yes! Yes! Yes! The best I have had in a long time. The sides of cole slaw were crisp and flavorful and the fries delicious. They have a wonderful dessert menu but we were way to full to try that. I give Anna’s a five star rating for location, food and service.

Onward we drove. After our culinary feast we decided we needed some walking time. It was very warm outside so we decided to make it a short cool stroll. We drove down to Popham. Past the Popham State Park, a 529 acres: spacious sand beach, bathhouses, freshwater rinse-off showers, picnic area with charcoal grills, trails and wildlife watching.

Onward  two miles further south on Route 209 to Fort Popham. We knew from past experience that this would be a cool short walk with some amazing views and interesting historical features. We walked in the coolness of the granite wallsFort Popham and peered out through the openings where cannons once were mounted to protect the mouth of the river. Hidden rooms and calcium formations gave a somewhat Eerie feel to the fort. After exploring all of the forts walls and hidden staircases we went down to the harbor and watched as fisherman tried their luck at catching the many fish that inhabit the mouth of the Kennebec River.

Feeling a bit hot and tired we went to the local grocery store that is located right on the beach and ordered up some ice cream combs. We went out to the beach Popham Beachand sat on one of the picnic tables and enjoyed the sights of the boating traffic and smell of the salt air.

Phippsburg is a wonderful area to spend the day. There are many attractions to keep you and the family busy. There are trails that walk along the river and ponds and a short mountain trail that offers great views. Beaches, Inns, restaurants and so much more. If you are in the Mid Coast area. take a day trip down to Phippsburg. You will be glad you did.
